A Bit of Backstory

"Seeing, in the finest and broadest sense, means using your senses, your intellect, and your emotions.  It means encountering your subject matter with your whole being.  It means looking beyond the label of things and discovering the remarkable world around you."

- Freeman Patterson

“Happy is he who understands the causes of things”

- Virgil

The more things a man is interested in, the more opportunities he has to be happy”

- Bertram Russell

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

What makes photography a strange invention is that it’s primary raw materials are light and time”

Luck is the residue of Design”

Adam Sprott is an Explorer, a Scientist, and a Critical Thinker. Deeply curious in all things to do with nature, earth, and space, Adam has pursued a career of adventure throughout the wilderness of Canada and the rewarding labyrinth of science. His unique combination of farming know-how, geo-spatial expertise, and photography provides a distillation of unique insights and an embrace of multifaceted perspectives.

Photography has always been my primary medium of choice as it combines elements of both art and science – which, in my view, are just two sides of the same coin. There is no place for ugly mathematics, and well-done science produces aesthetic data and beautiful explanations. Growing up on a cow-calf cattle farm, I have been immersed both in nature and in mechanics which has cultivated an insatiable curiosity to further my understanding of the world. I have always found that photography lends itself well to the naturally curious, being that it is really a strange invention able to rely on the raw materials of light and time while simultaneously capturing details and memories of reality and the world around us. Art and science are ultimately methods of storytelling, and every good photo tells a story.

Originally hailing from where the Headwaters meet the Highlands in Grey County, Ontario, Canada, Adam has always had one foot on both sides of the split-rail fence so to speak. Starting young, Adam felt immersed in nature whether it was tapping maple trees, bottle-feeding wayward calves, or fishing in the creek. When the chance came to uproot, Adam embarked on a career of adventure throughout the wilderness of Canada and the remoteness of South America.

As a photogrammetric scientist and artist, Adam Sprott has built a career and gathered the experience to push forward the frontiers of real-world rendering the in the digital space. With an exacting eye for detail, an insatiable curiosity, and a deep appreciation for photographic principles and natural beauty, Adam Sprott has cultivated a general handiness, field know-how, and grit that spans both our physical and digital realities. His advanced skill set in computer science, biology, and photography provide a unique perspective from which he can solve multifaceted problems with an interdisciplinary focus.

Relying on the randomness of chance and entropy to capture these moments, at these times and in these places, is a special process. Any good artist or scientist needs an audience, and, perhaps, these photos are worth a look or two.
